Yogiraj Sri Shyama Charan Lahiree

Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree is a Sublime Household Yogi of the 19th Century (1828-1895). He arrived as a Human Being to revive Kriya yoga for the masses. Man could thus reach out to Him, express their joys and sorrows, receive solace, hence be at one with Him.

The basic tenet of Kriya yoga which He advocated was to be a yogi, the best existence one could abide by was that of a householder. Therefore to set an example to mankind, He scrupulously remained within the family precincts and practised sadhana. Just as common man undergoes impediments in earthly existence, He caused many impediments upon Himself, yet practised austere sadhana and reached it's pinnacle within four years. Thus He remarkably juxtaposed family existence with all it's ups and downs and responsibilities with an austere sadhana regimen, which cannot be noticed in thousands of years.

His Kriya realizations penned by Himself in His 26 diaries provide to humanity the invaluable storehouse of knowledge and guidance.

He has laid tenets of Kriya yoga or Rajayoga that man, the supreme essence of all beings can through Kriya yoga reach the state of enlightenment, maximizing the full human potential to know God and to be One with Brahma. It certainly is not a difficult task but requires ardent diligent endeavours.

Further details of Yogiraj Sri Shama Churn Lahiree Mahasaya can be derived from the literary works of Yogacharya Dr. Ashoke Kumar Chatterjee.

Lokenath Baba

Whenever you are in danger, whether in ocean or in war or in the wild, remember Me. I shall save you. You may not know Me. You may not realize who I am. Just pray to Me with a little touch of your heart and I shall free you from gripping sorrows and miseries." Over two centuries after these words were uttered by a sage, they have become famous all over Bengal.

The Saint of Bengal:
Here is one sage who predicted that a century after his death, he would be greatly revered by one and all. True enough, at present, his is a household name in Bengal. Nearly every Hindu Bengali home has his idol placed in the family altar, huge temples are being built in his honor, thousands of devotees bow before him and glorify him as their Guru and Lord. He is Baba Lokenath.

Baba is Born:
Baba Lokenath was born on Janmasthami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, in 1730 (18th Bhadra, 1137) to a Brahmin family in the village of Chaurasi Chakla, a couple of miles away from Calcutta. His father, Ramnarayan Ghosal's sole wish in life was to dedicate one child to the path of renunciation to liberate the family. So when the fourth son was born to his wife Kamaladevi, he knew that the time had come for him to initiate his boy to the service of the Almighty.

Education & Training:
Accordingly, he ventured to a nearby village of Kochuya and pleaded with Pandit Bhagawan Ganguly to be his son's guru and teach him the Shastras rich in Vedic wisdom. At the age of 11, young Lokenath left home with his guru. His first sojourn was the Kalighat Temple, then for 25 years he lived in the forests, selflessly serving his master and practising the Ashtanga Yoga of Patanjali along with the most difficult Hatha Yoga.

Penance & Enlightenment:
Baba Lokenath was nearly seven feet tall with little flesh on him. Denying the needs of his physical self, he negated sleep, never closed his eyes or even blinked. He went about stark naked and in that state he braved the chill of the Himalayas and immersed himself in profound meditation or samadhi for nearly five decades. Finally, the light of self-realization dawned on him at the age of 90.

Baba's Travels on Foot:
After his enlightenment he traveled extensively on foot to Afghanistan, Persia, Arabia and Israel, making three pilgrimages to Mecca. When he came to the small town Baradi near Dhaka, a wealthy family built him a small hermitage, which became his ashram. He was then 136 years of age. There he put on a sacred thread and clothed himself in saffron robes. For the rest of his life he bestowed miracles and celestial wisdom on all who came to him to seek blessing.

Baba's Teachings:
His teachings were infused with simplicity that endeared the common man. He preached love and devotion and an unwavering faith in God and in one's deeper, immutable self. For him nothing is but Self. After attaining siddhi or enlightenment he said: "I have seen only Myself. I am bound by my own karma. The materialistic world is bound by the tongue and the sex organ. He who can restrain these two is fit to attain siddhi (enlightenment)."

Baba Leaves His Physical Body:
On the 19th day of Jyestha, 1297 (June 3, 1890), at 11:45 am, the Baba was seated in his usual Gomukh yoga asana. He went into a trance with his eyes open, and while still meditation, the Baba left his physical body forever. He was aged 160. He said, before death: "I am eternal, I am deathless. After this body falls, do not think that everything will come to an end. I will live in the hearts of all living beings in my subtle astral form. Whoever will seek my refuge, will always receive my grace".

"In Danger, Remember Me":
It is believed that Baba Lokenath appeared in a vision to Suddhananda Brahamachari in 1978, over 100 years after he died, commanding him to write his life story, and he wrote the Baba's biography entitled "In Danger, Remember Me". Today, Lokenath Brahmachari is the household deity of millions of Bengali families on both sides of the border.

The Life of Trailanga Swami of Benares

Swami Trailanga, who was reputed to be nearly three hundred years old when he died, is so renown in India on such a widespread basis, that few Hindus would deny the possibility of truth in any story related to his astounding miracles. If Jesus returned to earth and walked the streets of New York, displaying his divine powers, it would cause the same awe among the people that Trailanga created decades ago as he passed through the crowded lanes of Benares. He was one of the siddhas (perfected beings) that have cemented India against the erosions of time.

On many occasions the Swami was seen to drink, with no ill effect, the most deadly poisons. Thousands of people, many still alive today, bserved Trailanga floating on the Ganges for days on end, sitting ON TOP of the water or remaining hidden for long periods under the waves. A common sight at Manikarnika Ghat was the Swami"s motionless body on the blistering stone slabs, wholly exposed to the merciless Indian sun.

Whether the great master was above water or under it, and whether or not his body challenged the fierce solar rays, Trailanga sought to teach men that human life need not depend on oxygen or on certain conditions and precautions.

The yogi was great not only spiritually, but physically. His weight exceeded three hundred pounds : a pound for each year of his life. As he ate very seldom, his mystery increased. A master, however, easily ignores all usual rules of health when he desires to do so for some special reason, often a subtle one known only to himself.

Great saints that have Awakened from the cosmic mayic dream and realized this world as an idea in the Divine Mind, can do as they wish with the body, knowing it to be only a manipulatable form of condensed or frozen energy. Though physical scientists now understand that matter is nothing but congealed energy, illumined masters have passed victoriously from theory to practice in the field of matter control.

Trailanga always remained completely nude. The harassed police of Benares came to regard him as a baffling problem child. The natural Swami, like the early Adam in the garden of Eden, was unconscious of his nakedness. The police were quite conscious of it, however, and unceremoniously committed him to jail. General embarrassment ensued ; the enormous body of Trailanga was soon seen, in its usual entirety, on the prison roof. His cell, still securely locked, offered no clue to his mode of escape.

The discouraged officers of the law once more performed their duty. This time a guard was posted before the Swami"s cell. Might again retired before Right : the great master was soon observed in his nonchalant stroll over the roof.

The Goddess of Justice wears a blindfold; in the case of Trailanga the outwitted police decided to follow her example.

The great yogi preserved a habitual silence. In spite of his round face and huge, barrel-like stomach, Trailanga ate only occasionally. After weeks without food, he would break his fast with potfuls of clabbered milk offered to him by devotees. A skeptic once determined to expose Trailanga as a charlatan. A large bucket of calcium-lime mixture, used in whitewashing walls, was placed before the swami.

"Master," the materialist said, in mock reverence, "I have brought you some clabbered milk. Please drink it."

Trailanga unhesitatingly drank, to the last drop, the quarts of burning lime. In a few minutes the evildoer fell to the ground in agony.

"Help, swami, help !" he cried. "I am on fire ! Forgive my wicked test !"

The great yogi broke his habitual silence. "Scoffer," he said, "you did not realize when you offered me poison that my life is one with your own. Except for my knowledge that God is present in my stomach, as in every atom of creation, the lime would have killed me. Now that you know the divine meaning of boomerang never again play tricks on anyone."

The sinner, healed by Trailanga"s words, slunk feebly away.

The reversal of pain was not a result of the master"s will but of the operation of the law of justice that upholds creation"s farthest swinging orb. The functioning of the divine law is instantaneous for men of God-realization like Trailanga ; they have banished forever all thwarting crosscurrents of ego.

On one known occasion in Benares, Trailanga forsook his usual silence in order to pay public honor to Lahiri Mahasaya. One of Trailanga"s disciples objected.

"Sir", he said, "why do you, a Swami and a renunciant, show such respect to a householder ?".

Trailanga replied, "My son, Lahiri Mahasaya is like a divine kitten, remaining wherever the Cosmic Mother has placed him. While dutifully playing the part of a worldly man, he has received that perfect Self-realization which I have sought by renouncing everything - even my loincloth!".

Happiness & soul improvement

To become happy at first we need to be mentally strong. Now the question is that this strength differs from person to person. Why? I have asked myself thousand times. May be this is due to genetic influence. But this strength can be gained by meditation. Each and everyday when we start our day just utter "This is my day. Everything will be in my favor. I will succeed." It may add some potential. Before going to bed at night a 5 min practice of meditation may yield an excellent result. Just close your eyes, take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Start to imagine a bright point or a flame glowing in-between your eyebrows. Just think that you are
in a dark black tunnel and you are in search of light. Go ahead on. Try to see a flame in the total darkness. This will make you relaxed.

In our practical life we have to maintain some ethics. Just do your work with utmost care, don't pay attention to others, concentrate on your work only. Don't be indulged in gossips. Be robust and strong in mind. If you can, help some downtrodden people. Earning money is good but it is better to save money for future. Help people as per your capacity. Don't go beyond capacity. Always speak the truth. If possible never tell a lie. And talk little. If you can, keep mum for the whole day. Sound is energy. Making sound results a big loss in energy. So talk little.

You can't control birth, marriage and death. But we can control the flow of other events in our life. Practically speaking you don't need a "Guru" from whom you take "Diksha". At first judge your would be "Guru". Since you are going to take shelter under Him, for that you need to be sure. Once you consider Him to be yours "Guru" you can never suspect Him. You can't do that. If you do so, you may experience problems. Again keep it in your mind that everything is pre-destined.

Don't run your sail to the stream. If you have complete faith on GOD, you don't need a so called "Guru".

Worship Lord "Shiva" and "Adyasakti". They are Supremo. Call Them. But the first and formost thing is that you need to be pure by heart. Your purity makes a bridge between you and and the Supremo.

Who is the happiest?

Who is the happiest man of this world? Who can say that "Yes!I am the happiest man." None. Because happiness comes from our inner mind. So whats are the formula of happiness? A lot of things to be discussed regarding this. I will try to say something. But not today. Not now.
